Your child's bedroom is a place for her to dream, play and sleep. When you choose decorating items for your baby or toddler, you may be overwhelmed by the number of choices available. Keep in mind that you will probably keep the furnishings and decor that you choose for your newborn for two or three years, after which you will need to redecorate every few years as your child grows. Try to choose sturdy pieces that will be versatile enough to last your child from toddlerhood through her teenage years.

Step 1

Choose furniture for the room. When shopping for a crib or toddler bed, keep in mind safety considerations, such as a snug-fitting mattress and lead-free paint. Unless the room is very small, choose a standard-sized dresser to hold your child's clothing as he grows. According to TLC, a conventional changing table is the safest place to change a baby. Pick one with a rail to reduce the risk of dangerous falls. A rocking chair or glider with a footstool will give you a place to sit when feeding or rocking your baby or toddler.

Step 2

Keep toys on a low shelf or in bins instead of a toy box. If a child's toy is at the bottom of a large box, she may overturn the box or throw everything out of it, making a large mess in the process. Keep toys separated by type, and periodically go through them with your child to help keep them in order.

Step 3

Ask your young child what color he'd like the room painted and give him a choice of themes when it comes time to redecorate, recommends Rental Decorating Digest. While an infant does not care if you choose ducks or bunnies for the nursery, as your child approaches the age of two or three, he may have a definite preference between dinosaurs and baseball.

Step 4

Add fun accents to the room. A child's bedroom is the place where she can be silly, whimsical or nostalgic, even if the rest of the house is decorated in a more traditional or contemporary manner. HGTV.com suggests vintage toys, under-the-sea and tree house themes, and bright colors for children's bedrooms.
