The city of Kentwood is located south of the Grand Rapids-Wyoming metropolitan area in western Michigan. While Kentwood and Grand Rapids offer a wealth of attractions, nature lovers and sport enthusiasts can head for nearby campgrounds to explore Michigan's outdoor activities. Within 30 miles of Kentwood, there are several campgrounds offering a buffet of sports including kayaking, canoeing, swimming, whitewater paddling, fishing, horseback riding and golf. Kentwood is conveniently located; in under an hour you can be parking your RV or pitching your tent on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.
Closest to Kentwood
If you are eager to set up camp and relax, there are several options within 20 miles of Kentwood. Closest to the city, Woodchip RV Park is 5 1/2 miles southwest and features modern facilities including a pool and plenty of activities for kids and adults. Fourteen miles southeast of Kentwood, Indian Valley Campground and Canoe Livery offers modern and primitive sites, hot showers and a laundry, game room and camp store. Sports activities include canoe trips on the Thornapple and Coldwater rivers, whitewater paddling, fishing, swimming and golf. Hungry Horse Campground, 16 miles south of the city, features a solar-heated swimming pool, hiking trails, basketball, volleyball and horseshoes. The campground has 85 large sites, cabins and a primitive camping area.
South of Kentwood
There's something for everyone at Sandy Pines, located 16 miles south of Kentwood. Campground facilities feature 813 wooded acres, lake access and sandy beach, indoor and outdoor pools, an 18-hole golf course, 24-hour security, cable TV, full restaurant and a packed calendar of events. Private boats are not permitted, but visitors can rent canoes, rowboats, paddle boats and golf carts. At Yankee Springs Recreation Area, 27 miles south of Kentwood, campers have a choice of 200 modern sites at Gun Lake, 120 rustic sites at Deep Lake and 25 equestrian sites. A youth organization campgrounds is also available. With nine lakes and 10 miles of Nordic trails, Yankee Springs offers sports activities year-round, including hiking, mountain biking, fishing, ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
North of Kentwood
Grand Rogue Campgrounds and Paddlesports, 19 miles north of Kentwood, takes pride in being a quiet family camping area that offers personalized service, pull-through sites and loads of fun things to do at the 75-acre campground and surrounding area. Paddle sports are the main attraction. Activities include exploring the Grand and Rogue rivers on tube, kayak and canoe trips. Taking the Campground Tour Train along the rivers and through the wooded trails is a special treat. Lakeside Camp Park, 29 miles north of Kentwood, is a modern campground with 146 campsites on 35 acres, a clubhouse and a recreation hall. The park also features a sandy swimming beach and five-acre private lake stocked with bass, trout, catfish and other species. A fishing license is not required.
East of Kentwood
For campers who love to golf, Tyler Creek Golf Course & Campground, 24 miles southeast of Kentwood, is the ideal spot. The campground accommodates both RVs and tents. Tyler Creek offers campers a scenic 18-hole golf course and free Saturday morning clinics with a PGA pro. Other amenities include a swimming pool, activities for the kids, a fishing pond and a designated trout stream. Thirty-three miles east of Kentwood, Ionia Recreation Area features 100 modern and 49 equestrian-rustic camp sites. Hiking, mountain biking, and fishing in Sessions Lake are all popular activities. Birding is a special feature. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports that the Audubon Society has identified over 199 species of birds in the area.
At Lake Michigan
No visit to the area is complete without a stop at Lake Michigan; sunsets alone are worth the trip. Kentwood is within 55 minutes of two state parks on the lakeshore. Holland State Park offers two modern campgrounds: one on the dunes of Lake Michigan, and another is a half-mile away at Lake Macatawa. Activities include biking on the Ottawa County trail, beach volleyball, metal detecting, fishing and swimming. Grand Haven State Park is a 48-acre stretch of sandy beach between Lake Michigan and the Grand River. Park facilities include 174 paved modern campsites. Campers enjoy sunbathing, swimming and fishing from the pier in view of the Grand Haven lighthouse. Dogs are not permitted on the beach.
