The human body naturally cleanses itself on a daily basis. The excretory system is in place to help rid the body of toxins and waste. However, many naturopaths advocate regular colon cleansing for restorative and healing purposes. Dr. Elson Haas, naturopathic physician and cleansing expert, calls cleansing and detoxification the "missing link" in modern nutrition. There are many methods of detoxification, some of which are very extreme. Individuals should always consult a health-care professional before beginning any cleansing program.

Colon-Cleansing Foods

One of the simplest and most natural ways to cleanse and detoxify the digestive tract is to eat a healthy diet rich in antioxidants and high in fiber. Fiber provides bulk in the intestines and helps to stimulate contraction of the colon. The Mayo Clinic lists a number of foods, mostly fruits and vegetables, which are high in fiber and naturally cleansing. Some of the most cleansing foods include: pears, apples, dried fruits such as figs, artichokes, peas, lentils, cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, as well as whole grains like barley and oatmeal. High-fat foods, meats and dairy products should be avoided during the cleansing period.

Colon-Cleansing Herbs

There are several herbs that have cleansing and detoxification properties. Herbs that have have a harsh laxative or cathartic effect may be harmful and even habit-forming, and those should be avoided. Aloe vera juice is naturally cleansing and healing to the digestive tract. According to the Clayton College of Natural Health herb guide, it is a gentle laxative and is soothing to the intestines. It is used by herbalists to treat constipation and strengthen the immune system. The herb guide does warn it should not be used by pregnant women. Other colon-cleansing herbs listed include cascara sagrada and buckthorn. Herbs and other supplements should be used only under the direction of a health-care practitioner.

Liquid Fasting

Liquid fasting is another way to cleanse the digestive system. This method is followed only for short periods of time, generally no more than 10 days. Liquid fasting methods include consuming only fresh fruit and vegetable juices, herbal teas or water. The Master Cleanse, popularly known as "the lemonade diet," is outlined by Dr. Elson Haas in his book, "The New Detox Diet." Only freshly squeezed lemon water mixed with maple syrup and a pinch of cayenne pepper is consumed for up to 10 days. While this powerful cleansing method helps rid the body of excess mucous and waste, Dr. Haas does warn that following the plan long-term or too frequently can have harmful side effects, such as leaching calcium from the teeth. It is important to check with a physician before beginning a liquid-only cleansing program.
