Knowing what to do during a colon cleanse can make the difference between giving up and having a successful cleanse that rids your body of harmful toxins. Certain diet tips can make the cleanse more effective and help you feel better in terms of your weight and overall health. Consult your doctor before undergoing any cleanse procedure.

Distilled Water

Your body is made mostly of water; all your vital organs require water to carry out their daily duties. For your body to perform most efficiently, with all its parts working harmoniously, it must be properly hydrated with water. This means drinking at least eight glasses of water per day, with distilled water the best to drink when cleansing the colon.

Distillation is the process where water is boiled and evaporated, with the vapor then condensed back to its liquid form. This gets rid of impurities in the water --- making it perfect for drinking when you are getting rid of your body's impurities. Distilled water is free of dissolved minerals and therefore can actively absorb and eliminate toxic substances from the body, health blogger Owen Hennefer writes. Not only can a colon cleanse rid your body of toxins, but, the Colon Cleanse Information website notes, many experts believe that the average person has five to 40 pounds of accumulated waste matter in their colon --- some of which a cleanse may get rid of.

Fruits and Vegetables

Every colon cleanse diet allows for fruits and vegetables, and are both safe to eat during that time and beneficial for your health. Although nearly any fruits and vegetables are effective during cleansing, those high in dietary fiber are particularly helpful choices. According to the Mayo Clinic, foods that are high in dietary fiber prevent or relieve constipation, normalize bowel movements, aid in weight loss and might even play a role in preventing colon diseases. Fruits and vegetables high in fiber include apples, blackberries, lentils, beans, pears, peas, raspberries and spinach, the Fruits & Veggies More Matters website adds.

Vitamins

Taking vitamins every day can help provide the body with essential nutrients during a colon cleanse. Vitamins B6 and K are particularly helpful to the colon, as is vitamin D. Getting adequate vitamin D in your diet and in supplement forms reduces the risk of colon cancer, the Vitamin D Council website reports, noting research by Harvard University scientists.
