Wiffle ball is a recreational game that mimics baseball. Pitches are thrown with a plastic ball that has oblong holes on one half of the ball. This design allows the ball to curve dramatically, giving batters a chance to work on hitting a curve ball. Batters can drive the ball with a powerful swing, without having to worry about injuring any players. The game can be played with as few as two players.
Step 1
Throw a curve ball by placing your fingers on the solid side of the ball, with the perforations on the inside. When a right-handed pitcher is throwing with a standard overhand grip, the perforated holes should be facing first base. This will allow the ball to curve between 8 and 12 inches on its way from the pitcher's hand to home plate.
Step 2
Throw a fastball by holding the ball with the solid half facing the ground, and the side with the perforated holes facing the sky. When thrown with a standard overhand grip, this ball will fly relatively straight as it heads toward the batter. There will be some movement, but the ball will not curve very much when thrown with this grip, and it will look like a fastball.
Step 3
Throw a slide by throwing the ball with an overhand motion, perforated holes to the outside. This pitch will travel much faster than a curve ball, and it will also break down and away from a right-handed batter. However, the break will be sharper and smaller than a curve ball. It will require the batter to react quickly in order to recognize the breaking action, since the ball comes in relatively straight and does not break until just before reaching the batter. One of the best ways to throw this pitch is for the right-handed pitcher to throw it right at the right-handed batter. Just when the batter thinks the ball is going to hit him, it breaks into the strike zone.
Step 4
Throw a submarine-style pitch, with the perforations to the inside, to throw a screwball. When thrown by a right-handed pitcher, this ball will break away from a left-handed batter but into a right-handed batter. This pitch often has a huge breaking radius of 18 inches or more. When the right-handed pitcher fires this pitch over the middle of the plate to a left-handed batter, it will be out of the strike zone by the time it reaches home plate.
