Employee morale will determine workplace productivity to a large extent. Unhappy employees will not do their best work, and it's possible that a talented individual may leave your company if he becomes too dissatisfied. But there are steps you can take to make sure everyone feels appreciated and functions to the best of their abilities, most of which won't cost you a dime.
Take Suggestions
Schedule a meeting with each employee, and ask for suggestions on improving morale in the workplace. You may learn about a problem you didn't know existed, and the employees will feel as though their input matters. Not all of the suggestions may be feasible, but if something crops up from multiple sources, there's a good chance it needs to be addressed.
Redefine Workplace
Adjust the culture of the workplace based on the employees' suggestions. Emphasize a stress-free environment where everyone can work as a team. Allow work to be fun sometimes, and make everyone feel they are an integral part of a large, supportive group.
Give Feedback And Goals
Provide guidance to the employees so they know what you expect of them, but do it in a way that isn't condescending or demeaning. Make sure feedback is constructive. Establish clear goals for every employee to accomplish. This will allow the employee to focus their efforts avoid wasting time on frivolous tasks. If you give them a path and keep them on it, the work will get done much more quickly and the employees will have less stress because they know exactly what's expected of them.
Reward Good Work
Employees who feel their work is appreciated will want to continue to work hard. Reward them when they do a good job. Some workplaces have an employee of the month. You also might choose to praise them in front of their peers, throw a quick pizza party for the office or even hand out a bonus check.
