Tent camping in South Florida is a fun way to explore the outdoors and escape from the hassles of everyday life. Whether you are just visiting the area to see some of Florida's many attractions or looking for an outdoor adventure, South Florida's got a tent-friendly campground ideal for your activity level and desires.
Types of Campgrounds
Campgrounds in southern Florida range from family- or privately-owned to state and national parks. The amenities of the campgrounds vary, and may include several comforts and conveniences or be basic and rustic. There are several state parks located on the Florida Keys, and national parks such as Everglades National Park which offer campgrounds.
Types of Campsites
Whatever type of campsite you are looking for, you'll find it in southern Florida. If you want to camp in a campground setting with other campers that include amenities such as showers then try the developed campgrounds at a state or national park or a private campground. Primitive sites are available as well, and may or may not include basic conveniences such as pit toilets or potable water. Some primitive sites aren't accessible by car, giving you an opportunity for seclusion and a healthy dose of exercise. Backcountry sites, such as those at Everglades National Park, are accessible by canoe, foot or bicycle and include beach, chickee or ground sites. Other backcountry sites in the region are similar in nature to primitive sites.
Features
When staying at a family-owned or independent campground such as Miami Everglades Campground in the southern part of the peninsula, expect amenities such as wireless Internet, recreation halls, camp stores and game rooms. State parks, such as John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, offer picnic tables, toilets and hot showers. The campgrounds are also located near destinations or other activities outside of the campground. The Naples/Marco Island KOA is close to several attractions such as Naples' Tin City, Marco Island, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and the Everglades.
Exercise and Outdoor Activities
Many campgrounds offer outdoor sports and recreation such as basketball or volleyball. Several campgrounds offer sport courts, such as the Sugarloaf Key/Key West KOA. Banana bike or other bicycle rentals are located in several KOA and other campgrounds as well. Some parks, such as Bahia Honda State Park, are built around the outdoors and offer activities such as hiking, canoeing, snorkeling and swimming.
Considerations
South Florida is home to several venomous species of snakes and spiders, all of which you have the possibility of encountering while tent camping. Five dangerous spiders -- the southern black widow, northern black widow, brown widow, red widow and brown recluse live throughout the state. The brown recluse, however, is not an established specie. Snakes including coral snakes, several rattlesnakes and the cottonmouth -- also known as water moccasins -- are here, too . For extra precaution and help identifying these species, take a field guide with you on your camping trip.
