Preparing for a new baby can be overwhelming. Tackling the list of clothing, furniture and equipment a newborn needs is a daunting task. Focus on the essential items you'll need before your baby even comes home from the hospital, and save others until your baby is a little older. Consult your doctor for any special recommendations.
Clothing
Between diaper malfunctions and infant spit-up, expect to change your baby often during her first few months. But since babies outgrow their clothing quickly, don't buy too much in those early days. The BabyCenter website suggests buying four to seven one-piece outfits, or onesies; several pairs of pajamas or sleep sacks; four to seven cotton shirts; several pairs of socks or booties, and a hat. If you are bringing your baby home in cold weather, add a warm jacket and a snow suit to your list of essentials.
Eating
Expect your baby to eat every two to four hours, and have enough bottles on hand --- if you're using them --- to get you through the day. Even if you are breastfeeding, have bottles available for expressed milk. Other necessities for baby meals include a nursing pillow, nipple cream and bibs.
Nursery
Buy a crib or bassinet for your baby to sleep in. Keep an extra supply of sheets and mattress pads handy to minimize middle-of-the night laundry sessions. His nursery should also include a changing table. This can be a bureau or dresser with a top cleared for changing. Stock plenty of diapers, wipes and diaper cream, and purchase a receptacle for dirty diapers. A glider or rocking chair, though not essential, will make feedings more comfortable for the new mother.
Travel
A good car seat is the safest way to protect your baby on the road. The U.S. Department of Human Services recommends buying a new seat, so you can be sure it is safe and in good condition. You will also need a stroller and a diaper bag packed with your newborn's feeding and changing essentials. You may also elect to purchase a sling or backpack in which to carry your baby around at home or while walking around the neighborhood.
Care
Bathe your baby in a plastic tub specifically for newborns. Purchase other bath items include a gentle soap, hooded towels and wash cloths. You will also need nail clippers and moisturizing cream for after baths.
Accessories
Other baby essentials include pacifiers, receiving blankets, a thermometer, bulb syringe, nightlight and toys and books.
