Doctors often recommend a bland diet for patients recovering from surgery. Bland foods also help reduce the symptoms of heartburn, ulcers, gas and vomiting, according to the National Institutes of Health's MedlinePlus website. Bland foods tend to be soft, low in fiber, caffeine-free and easy to digest. Dietitians often create individualized plans for patients trying to avoid fried, spicy or raw foods that will irritate the stomach and intestines.

Crackers, Bread and Pasta

When taking it easy on your stomach, discard your usual tendency toward high-fiber bread and pasta. Bland diets include bread, pasta and crackers made with refined white flour for easier digestion. Opt for low-salt varieties of oyster crackers, crisp bread or saltines. Eat small amounts of plain pasta without adding butter, salt or cheese.

Meat and Fish

Lean meats such as turkey and chicken offer needed protein for a patient recovering from stomach surgery. Whitefish and shellfish, prepared without creamy sauces or spices, can be eaten baked, grilled or steamed, the MedlinePlus website recommends.

Hot Cereal

For a bit of nutritious comfort food, try a bowl of plain oatmeal, grits or Cream of Wheat. Keep ingredients to a minimum, and avoid brands with high fiber, high salt or added sugar. Adding a small amount of low-fat milk or a spoonful of applesauce adds flavor without hindering digestion.

Fruits, Vegetables and Soups

Fruits and vegetable juices can be part of a bland diet. Mild fruits such as bananas, apples, pears and peaches should be peeled and seeded before eating. Many cooked or canned vegetables, such as carrots and potatoes, are flavorful and easy to digest. Soups, especially simple broths, often taste good to a patient on the mend. Be sure to read food labels, looking for choices free of too much spice, salt or sugar.

Foods to Avoid

The National Institutes of Health advises patients on a bland diet to avoid foods including ice cream, chocolate, spices, broccoli, cabbage, green peppers, berries, bran cereal, sauerkraut, garlic, seeds, nuts, smoked meats and fried foods. Drinks with caffeine and alcohol also should be avoided during a bland diet regimen.

Other Recommendations

When following a bland diet, try to eat six small meals each day instead of larger, heavier meals, the University of Mississippi's Department of Food and Nutrition Services website advises. Eat food slowly, and chew well before swallowing. To give your body plenty of time to digest foods, consume your last meal two meals before bedtime, and avoid lying on your back too soon after eating, the site recommends.
