Loose skin is the last thing anyone wants after shedding extra pounds. Learn how to avoid sagging skin after weight loss. You can take steps as you lose weight to avoid or reduce your chances of loose skin. However, if your skin permanently loses its elasticity, you may have to live with saggy skin or resort to surgery to solve the problem.

Step 1

Lose weight at a slow and steady pace. The American College of Sports Medicine only recommend losing 1 to 2 lbs. a week. Quick weight loss associated with fad diets, diet pills or weight loss surgery doesn't give the skin enough time to shrink. People who try to shed pounds too quickly usually lose water weight and muscle tissue, according to MayoClinic.com.

Step 2

Use resistance training to strengthen muscle tissue. Perform weight lifting, calisthenics or resistance bands to build muscle, which will give your skin something to hold on to once you lose the fat. Two to three sessions of resistance training a week is sufficient to gain muscle strength, according to "Fitness: Theory and Practice" by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America.

Step 3

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and consuming fruits and vegetables. Keeping hydrated helps preserve your skin's elasticity, according to The Beverage Institute for Health & Wellness. While most of your hydration needs are met by drinking fluids, about 20 percent is provided by food.

Step 4

Eat foods rich in vitamins A and C to maintain your skin's elasticity, recommends CNN.com. Consume such foods as citrus fruits, strawberries or dark orange and green vegetables.
