Inclement weather can bring your outside bicycle training to a halt. You can, however, continue to train indoors with a special device called a bicycle trainer. Though several different designs of bicycle trainers exist, they all operate on the same principle. The trainer holds the rear wheel of the bike off the ground and stabilizes the bike. This allows a rider to mount the bike and pedal just as when riding outdoors. The trainer also provides resistance to simulate the traction of the road. A simple procedure, converting your bike to a trainer takes just a few minutes.

Step 1

Open the quick release lever on the rear wheel of your bike. Hold the quick release nut on one side of the axle and turn the quick release lever several turns. Remove the old quick release skewer from the axle.

Step 2

Insert the new quick release skewer, included with the bicycle trainer, into the axle of the wheel. Thread the special quick release nut onto new skewer until finger tight. Close the quick release lever.

Step 3

Unscrew the roller assembly knob and the grip knobs on the sides of the trainer. Place the bicycle onto the trainer so the ends of the new quick release skewer insert into the grips on either side of the trainer. Adjust the grip knobs to center the wheel in the trainer. Lock the grip knobs down.

Step 4

Adjust the roller assembly knob until the roller makes contact with the tire. Ride the bike to test it and adjust the tension on the roller assembly accordingly.
