Goal setting helps children define and reach for goals, both short-term and long-term. The goal-setting process doesn't always come naturally to children. Step-by-step instructions for goal setting ensures that the child understands how to take action toward achieving. Even young children can learn the basics of setting goals to accomplish specific tasks. Teaching a child how to set realistic goals and work toward those goals gives him a life-long skill for achievement.
Step 1
Brainstorm goal ideas with your child. The list might include goals related to school subjects, health, hobbies, habits and relationships with siblings or friends.
Step 2
Ask your child to select one goal to focus on for the goal-setting activity. Let her pick the goal so it is a more meaningful lesson for her.
Step 3
Help your child write the goal into a concrete statement that is measurable. For example, his goal might be to ride his bike 30 minutes a day for exercise.
Step 4
Draw a grid or series of boxes on a piece of paper to help your child break the goal down into steps. Work together to think of the steps that your child needs to achieve the goal. Write each step in its own square on the grid.
Step 5
Identify obstacles that might interfere with achieving the goal. Ask your child to think of ways to overcome those obstacles.
Step 6
Post the chart of the goal steps in a highly visible place to remind your child of the goal. Set aside time each day to work on the steps of achieving the goal. Ask your child how his efforts toward the goal are coming along.
Step 7
Praise your child for her goal-setting efforts. Give her specific positive feedback to encourage her to continue working on her goal-setting skills.
Tips and Warnings
- Let your child set her own goals, but encourage her to adjust them so the goals are realistic. The goals should challenge the child while still being attainable. Follow all of the steps for your own goals to serve as a role model for your child.
