Parents like to make books for their children that they can display to family members, to teach their children shapes and colors or to tell them a story they have made up for their children. You can make a variety of books to share with your child featuring different themes, pictures or educational material. These books can be geared for specific age groups and you can get your child involved by allowing her to help you design and create the book. Parents Magazine reports that reading with your child regularly fosters language skills and makes her a more eager reader.

Step 1

Decide what you will write about. Parents often tell their child a story they have created and want to get it down on paper. Other options include poetry, picture albums or a book designed to help a child with a subject he may be struggling with at school.

Step 2

Choose a design. Your book could be as simple as a few pieces of paper stapled together or as elaborate as a homemade pop-up book. Your book can be a specific shape, large or small, or even a flip book.

Step 3

Prepare the book. Cut the book into the shape you have chosen or fold the pages to create the book's layout. Cut out the spaces that will flip up, if you have decided on this design.

Step 4

Write the book. You can do this by hand or you can type it out on the computer, print it out and insert it into the book. Another idea is to print out the words first and then cut or fold the book.

Step 5

Illustrate the pages of your book. This is a step that kids can get involved with. Many children will enjoy drawing pictures to go with a story. You can use traditional art supplies like crayons or markers, or use a computer program to design your illustrations. You can even cut or tear construction paper into the pictures you want in the book and then place them onto the pages.

Step 6

Bind the book. You can do this with staples, a spiral binding kit or you can take it to a professional to have it bound for you. The latter is a good option for a book you want to last for a long time.

Tips and Warnings

  • Take your completed book to an office supply store to have it laminated. This will help the book hold up longer.
