The proper setup is something that most golfers don't even think about. They are more concerned with body position, backswing and follow-through than with the setup position. They just put the club behind the ball and begin the swing process. That lax attitude can cost a drive some strokes during the round. Taking the proper setup can give you the chance to hit more good shots during your round of golf.
Step 1
Square your club face behind the ball so that it is facing the target. In order to get your club head directly behind the ball, your left shoulder--for a right-handed golfer--must be facing the target. If you open or close your shoulder, you won't be able to put the club face down in a direct line with the green or the spot on the fairway where you want the ball to land.
Step 2
Form a triangle with your shoulders and your arms. Once you grasp the club, notice the position of your hands. They should be directly in the middle of your shoulders. If you draw an imaginary line from the point of each shoulder to your hands, it should form a triangle with two equal sides. If that is the case, you can lay the club head down directly behind the ball and put yourself in a position to hit a good shot.
Step 3
Pick the toe of the club up off the ground. The heel of the club--closest to your feet--should be on the ground. The toe should not be on the ground, however, but off the ground slightly. This will make it easier to cock your wrists during the backswing and put you in an excellent position to hit the ball with full power.
Step 4
Play the golf ball a couple of inches inside your front foot. This will allow you to hit the ball squarely on impact. Taking this position with each shot will help you gain consistency in your golf swing. If your play the ball too far forward or too far back in your swing, you will not hit the ball squarely.
