Having the proper golf grip and swing are perhaps the two biggest keys to success in golf. You need to have a comfortable and secure grip in order to hit the ball well. The grip must give you security, but it also must allow you to have touch so you can put pressure on the club and hit the ball in the correct way. Once you have the grip, you can hit the ball properly with a solid swing.
Step 1
Hold the golf club with your left hand--if you are a right-handed golfer--and put the small finger of your left hand about 1/4 inch from the top of the club. Wrap your fingers around the club and put your thumb down the shaft of the club.
Step 2
Take the small finger of your right hand and put it in the gap between your forefinger and your middle finger. Wrap your other fingers around the club and place your right thumb down the shaft of the club. This is called the overlapping grip, and it is the primary grip that golfers use at every level of the game.
Step 3
Put your left shoulder in line with the flagstick or the part of the fairway where you are aiming. Make sure your left foot is directly underneath your left shoulder and your feet are slightly more than shoulder width apart. Your knees should be flexed in an athletic position so you can transfer your weight during your golf swing.
Step 4
Rotate your hips to the rear to get your weight and momentum on your back leg. This is how to get your backswing started. Keep rotating your hips and then bring your hands up to shoulder height. You are now in the launch position and ready to strike the ball.
Step 5
Rotate your hips in the opposite direction and bring your weight and momentum to the right side. Follow with your hands to hit the ball with momentum. Keep going with your swing until your arms are at shoulder height. This allows you to hit the ball with distance and accuracy.
