The state capital of Texas, Austin is nestled within the Hill Country along the Colorado River. A number of lakes are near the city, including some of the Highland Lakes that run along the river and up into the country. Boating, fishing and swimming are among the activities on these lakes.
Lake Travis
The largest lake in Travis County can be found in the northwest corner of the county. Two golfing communities, Lago Vista to the north and Lakeway to the south, are along the lake shore. Vacation spots include the White Owl Retreat, the Point Venture Lake House and the Lost Parrot Cabins. Thirteen marinas and nine boat shops are available along the lake.
Lady Bird Lake
Formerly known as Town Lake, Lady Bird lake runs along the southern edge of downtown Austin. The Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail runs along the entire lake shore, through the parks at both ends and into downtown Austin. The ACC Riverside campus and golf course can be found near the Roy Guerrero Park on the east side of the lake.
Walter E. Long Lake
Walter E. Long Lake is located at the east end of town, along Highway 130. Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park borders the lake and includes a fishing pier, swimming area, more than 2 1/2 miles of trail and two volleyball courts.
Lake Austin
Lake Austin is the one of the Highland Lakes closest to the city. Bass and catfish fishing are predominant on the lake. The Lake Austin Spa Resort offers multiple activities that include pools, boat docks, training rooms and yoga.
Lake Marble Falls
Located 45 miles northwest of Austin, this Highland Lake is in the town of Marble Falls. The Meadowlakes golf course is open to the public, and numerous cabins and RV parks are located along the lake shore, including the River View RV Park and the Lakeside Vacation House. Activities include the town's annual Lakefest Drag Boat Races in August and waterskiing/boating activities are available.
