How to Create a Resume With No Job Experience

When applying for your first job, you may find that your potential employer requires a resume to proceed to the next step in the hiring process. If you have little or no job experience, writing a resume may seem like a catch-22: you need work experience to list on your resume, but to gain the job experience, you need a document explaining what makes you qualified for the position. Fortunately, you can create a resume that highlights your skills even if you have no job experience.

Step 1

Fill out your contact information for the top of the resume. This section should include your name, address, telephone number and email address. If you have your own professional website, include it as well. Be sure that your email address is professional-sounding. If necessary, open a new email account with an appropriate user name.

Step 2

Write an objective that describes the type of position that you are looking for. The Job Center of Wisconsin recommends being specific and keeping it brief. Tailor the objective to each company that you apply to instead of using a generic statement.

Step 3

List your skills and accomplishments. California Worksmart suggests listing your skills in the order of relevance to the job to which you are applying instead of listing them in chronological order. List several skills, with one or two statements explaining how you gained and have utilized these skills in the past.

Step 4

List your educational achievements in reverse chronological order. Place your most recent degree or certification at the top of this section, followed by previous degrees. If you have earned any licenses, add these to the same section. California Worksmart advises against including dates.

Step 5

Add any volunteer or leadership opportunities that you have participated in. The University of California at Santa Cruz lists this section under "Pre-Professional Experience."

Step 6

Add a line that says that references are available upon request, suggests the Job Center of Wisconsin. Have a list of several references available and typed up, but do not include it with your resume. Wait until your potential employer asks to see the list. Ask permission before putting anyone's name on the list.
