The widespread use of computers and Internet networking sites, such as Facebook and MySpace, make it easier than ever to reconnect with old friends, classmates and even family members. Whereas at one point, you had to rely on phone books, directory assistance and other friends to locate a long lost buddy, today you can likely find just about anyone with a few minutes of online sleuthing.
Step 1
Make a list of friends you want to contact. Ask current friends if they are still in touch with of the people on the list, as well as if they know if any of them got married or changed their last name. Make notes on your list about any changes.
Step 2
Contact your alma mater if you cannot remember the last names of people you want to reconnect with. Many schools keep old graduation programs and yearbooks you can look through, and some high schools maintain a list of past graduates to aid future reunion committees.
Step 3
Create a new email account specifically for the purpose of searching for friends. Some networking and people-search websites require you to register and doing so often results in spam. A dedicated email address for seeking out old friends also allows you to decide whether you want to give them your personal email address once you reconnect and keeps you off their forward lists for junkie email jokes and chain letters.
Step 4
Search major networking sites for each person on your list. You may need to create a profile to view some user's information, but you can usually at least see a picture of anyone whose name matches your search. If you want to contact anyone, a profile is required.
Step 5
Search online phone directories in your old town. Many times you can get a current phone number, address and even street map for anyone who matches your search.
Step 6
Send a brief email or message through the networking site that just says you want to get back in touch. Use your full name and give a reference for how you know the person. Include a shared memory that can help jog his memory if he cannot place your name or face.
