Omnicef, known also by its generic name cefdinir, belongs to a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. Doctors prescribe this medication to fight bacteria in the body responsible for ear infections, throat infections and sinus infections. It also helps patients fighting pneumonia. Omnicef generally only causes mild side effects; a doctor should be consulted if any side effect becomes bothersome or worrying.
Yeast Infections
A common side effect of Omnicef, yeast infections often occur when a person takes an antibiotic, says Arthur Schoenstadt, M.D. of eMedTV. Symptoms include itching and irritation of the vagina, pain upon urinating or during intercourse, abnormal vaginal discharge and itching or irritation of the vulva. While the discharge typically looks like cottage cheese, it usually has no odor. Antifungal drugs can be prescribed to treat yeast infections caused by Omnicef.
Diarrhea
Schoenstadt states that up to 15 percent of patients taking Omnicef experience diarrhea. Diarrhea is a condition causing loose, watery stools that occur a minimum of three times in a day. Patients experiencing diarrhea are at risk for dehydration. To prevent this, it is important to drink plenty of fluids until it passes. This is especially true for children and the elderly, as they face the greatest danger from dehydration, notes Schoenstadt. He recommends speaking to the doctor if this side effect lasts longer than three days.
Headache and Dizziness
Drugs.com states that patients may experience headache and dizziness as a result of taking Omnicef. A headache, though common, can result in pain traveling to the mouth, face and neck. In most cases, over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen are effective.
Dizziness, also known as vertigo, can cause patients to feel lightheaded, weak or unsteady. This poses a danger for patients driving a vehicle or working with heavy machinery. While the body may adjust within a day or two of taking Omnicef, speak to the doctor if it becomes worse.
Diaper Rash in Infants
Omnicef comes in a liquid form for infants. Infants taking the medicaiton may experience a diaper rash, notes Drugs.com. In mild cases, the skin becomes red and scaly. In more severe cases the baby may develop pimples, blisters or sores on her buttocks, thighs or genitals. Speak to her doctor if this side effect does not subside, as it can become infected, says FamilyDoctor.org.
