Outdoor travelers that prefer the rustic experience of tent camping will find plenty of opportunities along the Jersey Shore. Whether you want a quiet rustic experience in the woods, or to set up a tent on the beach and cruise a boardwalk at night, Jersey Shore has everything you'll need.
Camping Grounds
There are a number of places along the Jersey Shore for tent-camping outdoor enthusiasts. The Sea Pirate Campground, for example, features wooded and secluded tent camping sites with water access. These campgrounds are also surrounded by the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, with a number of outdoor activities available, including fishing, boating, crabbing and bird watching. Seashore Campsites, also along the Jersey Shore, offer more than 600 sites on a sprawling property that encompasses over 90 wooded acres. This campsite is near Cape May and Wildwood Beaches, with plenty of opportunities to swim, fish and surf.
Things to Pack
Those outdoors enthusiasts who plan to go camping along the Jersey Shore should definitely consider bringing along a few items that will come in handy for the camping experience. Since the Jersey Shore is clearly along the water expect tons of mosquitoes, so don't forget the bug spray. Also, many of the campgrounds along the beaches won't have the benefit of wooded cover, so be sure to bring sunblock. A clothesline or portable drying rack can come in handy, and definitely don't forget the beach gear. Most camping grounds will have these amenities available for purchase, particularly Ponderosa Campgrounds and Seashore Campsites.
Recreation
Tent campers will find plenty of things to do along the Jersey Shore. Ponderosa Campgrounds is near several beaches, including The Avalon, which features a small boardwalk with arcades, shopping and casual dining. Also, nearby Stone Harbor Beach is known for its surfing and catamarans. Seashore Campsites is near the Wildwood Beaches, where there is a long boardwalk with casual dining venues, water parks and amusement park rides. For those interested in escaping the camping life for a moment, Atlantic City is near enough and is filled with casinos and the Steel Pier amusement park.
Food
No matter where you are, you'll be able to find some sort of convenience store along the Jersey Shore. It is a good idea to make a packing list of food you'll need if you prefer to eat at your tent site. Also make sure to bring coolers filled with plenty of ice for storing meat and poultry items as you don't want to attract the attention of unwanted animals. Other than that, Ponderosa Campgrounds, Seashore Campsites and Sea Pirate Campgrounds are located within miles of restaurants with plenty of fresh seafood.
Campgrounds Near Popular Attractions
There are plenty of special campgrounds along the Jersey Shore that are near some popular attractions. Among these are the Cedar Campground and the Wading Pines Camping resort. Both offer tent sites. The Cedar Campground is near such attractions as the Popcorn Zoo, Tuckerton Seaport and the Barnegat Lighthouse. Wading Pines Camping Resort features a salt-water swimming pool and river tubing activities. It also features the "Jersey Devil" train which takes campers through the park on weekends.
