What To Look For

Since barefoot is best, look for a shoe that is flexible and mimics barefoot walking. The soles should be thin and flexible. You should be able to fold the soles in either direction. Also, look also for a smooth sole, which will decrease the likelihood of the shoe catching on the floor and causing your child to fall. The upper part of the shoe should be made with natural fibers, such as leather or cotton canvas.

Common Pitfalls

Unfortunately, many of the lower-priced baby shoes are not appropriate for babies. Stay away from thick, rigid soles and synthetic fibers, which cause little feet to sweat. Don't bother buying shoes at all until your baby is walking and needs to protect his feet outside. He should go barefoot or wear socks or booties whenever possible. This will allow him to grip the floor properly and build strength.

Where To Buy

Pediped footwear is a line of footwear that was given the American Podiatric Medical Association seal of approval. Shoes are available through their website at pediped.com. Pediped shoes are also carried at Amazon.com, Nordstrom and specialty baby boutiques. Other brands recommended by parents at the Berkely Parents Network include Robeez, Preschoolians and Stride Rite.

Cost

The Pediped "original" shoes are $32 through the website and at Nordstrom. Amazon.com has select styles ranging from $15 to $40, with most in the $30 range. All prices are as of 2010.
