Las Vegas, historically known as Sin City, has always provided plentiful food in large quantities but did not widen its scope to include vegetarian and healthy choices until recently. Today, Las Vegas attracts tourists looking for family-themed activities and top-rated entertainment, and the number of dining venues offering healthy alternatives to meat- and potato-laden buffets is impressive.
History
Las Vegas was originally known for cheap and plentiful food. Buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner were king. Las Vegas signage announced meals that were decidedly unheart healthy but cheaply priced for the gambling consumer.
Growth of Las Vegas
As Las Vegas grew and changed, it sought to reach a wider variety of customers. Among these new visitors were those looking for healthy meals and reasonable portions. Las Vegas broadened its gambling focus to include all-around entertainment for families and couples, which meant offering a variety of food selections, along with the traditional all-you-can-eat buffet.
Current Dining Alternatives for Travelers
Today's Las Vegas dining alternatives include not only healthy salads, fruit and vegetables at the buffets, but also restaurants geared to the health-conscious tourist. Some healthy dining restaurants are on the Las Vegas Strip in traveler-friendly hotels such as the Venetian, the Wynn, and the Palazzo. Restaurants range from vegetarian fare to sushi.
Dining Alternatives for Locals
Many restaurants with a healthy-food focus have opened off the Strip. Restaurants featuring raw foods, vegan cuisine and organic fare can be found throughout the region. Vegan and lacto-friendly Indian and Mexican cuisine can be found in fast food establishments, while organic foods and menus featuring soy products can be found in bistros.
Health Food Stores
Rainbow Acres, Whole Foods and other health food stores have opened in Las Vegas in the past decade, giving residents the alternative of shopping for fresh food and vitamins in a health-conscious environment. Gone are the days of strip clubs and tattoo parlors on every corner. Now health food and supplements are opening in many locations.
