Aluminum, the most abundant metal in the earth's crust, is also a common ingredient in several of the hygiene products that we use today. Accumulated exposure to aluminum has a toxic effect when absorbed by the body, and may result in conditions "ranging from skeletal deformities to brain degeneration. Antiperspirants, toothpaste and astringents are just a few of the personal care products that contain aluminum.
Antiperspirant
Aluminum is the active ingredient in many antiperspirants. Aluminum works by acting as a plug from within the sweat duct to prevent sweat from reaching the skin's surface. The porosity of the skin allows the aluminum to be absorbed and transmitted throughout the body.
Toothpaste
Aluminum is the active ingredient in most toothpastes. The body absorbs the aluminum from toothpaste by accidental ingestion or through residue that is left in the mouth after brushing. Once ingested, aluminum accumulates in various tissues of the body and may result in impaired kidney function, premature osteoporosis and anemia.
Astringent
Various astringents contain aluminum. Astringents are used topically as cleansing agents and are readily absorbed through the pores of the skin. Once absorbed, aluminum is able to move freely across cell membranes and collect in tissues throughout the body.
