Hair is most commonly severely damaged by coloring, bleaching or perming it, though excessive use of heated styling tools or excessive exposure to harsh chemicals, such as chlorine, can also damage it, note authors Claude Bouillon and John Wilkinson in "The Science of Hair Care." It is possible to restore your hair to health, but you will need to care for your hair daily for six to eight weeks to see substantial results.
Step 1
Trim off any split ends. Hair damage often results in split ends, which can damage hair further up the hair shaft in the same way an untreated crack in glass can spread and cause further damage, notes author Dale H. Johnson in "Hair and Hair Care."
Step 2
Mix 1/2 cup mayonnaise with 3 tbsp. olive oil and massage the mixture into your hair and scalp. Leave the mixture on for 30 minutes, then rinse and wash your hair. Do this once a week. According to author Zoe Diana Draelos, in "Hair Care: An Illustrated Dermatologic Handbook," the mayonnaise will moisturize damaged hair and the olive oil will strengthen it.
Step 3
Apply a hot oil treatment to your hair twice a week. Buy hot oil treatments at drugstores or beauty supply stores. According to "The Science of Hair Care," hot oil will best moisturize and nourish damaged hair when allowed to rest on your hair for at least 15 minutes before rinsing off.
Step 4
Apply a leave-in conditioner to your hair daily, focusing the application on the most brittle parts of your hair. According to "The Science of Hair Care," leave-in conditioners work all day to hydrate damaged hair.
