Requip XL, the extended release form of the medication ropinirole, is a prescription drug used alone or in combination with other medications for the treatment of symptoms of Parkinson's disease. The medication does not cure Parkinson's disease, but slows down the progression of the disease. Symptoms of Parkinson's disease include shakiness, muscle rigidity and trouble with mobility. Many side effects have been reported with the use of Requip XL; patients should discuss any concerns with a physician.
Syncope
Syncope is a drop in the blood pressure that leads to fainting or passing out due to temporary insufficient blood flow to the brain. Up to 12 percent of individuals may develop this side effect. The Drug Information Handbook explains that Requip XL impairs the regulation of blood pressure, which may lead to a sudden drop in blood pressure when a patient moves from lying position to standing position, especially with higher doses. This drop in blood pressure prevents proper flow to the brain and produces syncope. The medication should be used with caution in patients who take high blood pressure medications and patients who are at risk of developing low blood pressure, such those with heart or brain disease.
Nausea, Vomiting and Constipation
Nausea is a common side effect that may occur with the use of Requip XL. About 19 percent of users may experience this adverse reaction. Vomiting is seen in about 11 percent of individuals. Loss of appetite, stomach pain and indigestion may also be present in about 5 percent of patients. Basic and Clinical Pharmacology states that these side effects may be minimized by taking the medication with meals. Constipation, which is reported by more than 5 percent of users, may be treated with over-the-counter medications such as stool softeners and laxatives. If these drugs do not work or constipation worsens, the patient should inform his or her physician right away.
Drowsiness and Fatigue
Patients taking Requip XL may develop drowsiness and fatigue. Up to 40 percent of individuals report drowsiness while 10 percent experience fatigue. According to the Drug Information Handbook, patients treated with this medication have reported falling asleep while engaging in daily activities. Furthermore, these sleeping episodes may occur without any warning signs. The patient should be monitored for a sleeping disorder and use caution if using other medications that induce sleepiness. Physicians should warn patients to avoid driving or performing tasks that require mental alertness until the effects of the drug are known. A patient should stop taking the medication if excessive sleepiness or sleeping episodes occur.
Dizziness
Dizziness may occur in up to 40 percent of patients using Requip XL. This side effect lessens with continued use of the medication; however, patients should use caution when performing activities that require balance. If dizziness persists or worsens, the patient should contact a health care professional.
