Cetaphil is a popular line of over-the-counter skin products manufactured by Galderma Laboratories. Their products include moisturizers, cleansers and a body wash designed for those with sensitive skin. Cetaphil products are often recommended by physicians for use by those with skin allergies, acne, eczema and rosacea. Cetaphil's primary actions are to cleanse, moisturize and protect dry, cracked skin. The main ingredient of Cetaphil is cetearyl alcohol, a fatty alcohol emollient, used to increase the viscosity of lotions and shampoos, according to CosmeticsInfo.org.

Infection

Although Cetaphil products are very mild, they should not be applied over broken skin or an open sore. The emollients in Cetaphil products work to occlude the areas where they are applied in order to preserve moisture. This occlusion prevents those areas from "breathing," so it is possible for an infection to develop, according to HealthSquare.com.

Redness or Skin Rash

As mild as Cetaphil products are purported to be, there is always the chance of an allergy occurring to one of the ingredients in it. An allergy can appear as redness or a skin rash in the area where Cetaphil has been applied, according to Pharmacy Health. If a rash appears following the use of Cetaphil, the skin should be washed off with clear water and the use of Cetaphil discontinued.

Itching

The development of itching is possible if there is an allergy to any of the ingredients contained in Cetaphil products. If iching occurs at the site where Cetaphil has been applied, the product should be discontinued and the area washed off with warm water.

Burning and Stinging

Burning and stinging are other possible side effects from the use of Cetaphil products, according to HealthSquare.com. Areas of application that sting and burn should be washed in warm water and use should be discontinued.
