Helping a boy who is struggling in school can be a daunting task for parents. According to the Learning Resources Network, boys under-perform in school at a higher rate than girls due to a lack of organizational skills and a greater interest in technology, which may be lacking in schools. Focusing on your son's education will have far-reaching effects on his future.
Step 1
Communicate regularly with your child's teacher. If your child is struggling in school, his teacher probably has a decent idea as to why. Ask for specific help and advice regarding what you can do to help your child succeed in the classroom.
Step 2
Instill a love of learning in your son, according to the University of Illinois. To that end, use technology to help teach subjects and principles, such as encouraging the use of the Internet to do research, advises the Learning Resources Network. Use spreadsheet software to keep track of grades, goals and other details of schoolwork.
Step 3
Go over his homework with him every night, but don't do it for him, suggests the National Education Association. Let your child know you're there to help him and make sure the work gets done but that the only way he's going to learn is if he does the work himself.
Step 4
Limit TV and video game time, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Most shows kids watch on TV aren't helping them learn anything. Kids who spend too much time watching TV have less time to focus on their schoolwork. Set acceptable limits, and hold your son to those limits. Try and encourage him to play educational video or computer games that teach about math, history and science.
Step 5
Help your son get organized. Set up a daily, weekly and monthly calendar for his schoolwork, advises the National Education Association. Break large tasks into smaller, more manageable ones so your child doesn't feel so overwhelmed. Help your child prioritize tasks and assignments by due date, the size of the project and the amount of weight it holds in terms of grading.
