Wrinkles and fine lines are a common symptom of damaged skin. Because damage builds up over time, wrinkles are thereby associated with aging skin. Good Housekeeping magazine reports that such lines are common in the skin surrounding you mouth due to the constant movement that the region experiences. You don't have to live with wrinkled skin forever. Several over-the-counter skincare products, combined with lifestyle changes, can help you smooth out the wrinkles for a firmer, more youthful look.
Step 1
Wash your face twice a day using an exfoliating cleanser, focusing around your mouth. Preferably, the cleanser's exfoliating power should come from acids like lactic acid or salicylic acid, but physical exfoliating particles will also suffice. The University of Maryland Medical Center says exfoliation helps to reduce wrinkles in two ways. First, it loosens and removes the damaged skin cells that form the wrinkling. Second, it improves your skin's natural creation of collagen, which firms up the skin surface.
Step 2
Gently pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Don't rub your skin with the towel, as that can cause trauma to your skin and worsen the wrinkles.
Step 3
Avoid sun exposure as you go throughout your daily activities. Paula Begoun, a cosmetics skincare expert and author of "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me," says the sun causes new wrinkles and makes existing wrinkles deeper and longer. If you must step into the sunlight, smooth on a sunscreen product with a rated SPF of 15 or greater.
Step 4
Dab on an anti-wrinkle cream, focusing around your mouth, but also applying it to the rest of your face. There are dozens of effective anti-wrinkle creams on the market. Make sure the cream contains what the Mayo Clinic reports to be effective wrinkle-reducing chemicals or active ingredients, including tea extracts, kinetin, vitamin A and alpha hydroxy acids.
Step 5
Smear on a lip balm or chapstick onto your lips to help combat fine lines and wrinkling directly on your lips. This makes your lips look plumper and smoother, according to Good Housekeeping magazine's beauty editors.
