To first-time parents, the task of caring for a newborn may seem daunting. Although product manufacturers advertise dozens of "necessities," such as infant swings, rocking chairs and baby bottles, only a few items are truly necessary for caring for most newborns. If you are unable to breastfeed or your child has special needs, consult his pediatrician or your prenatal health care provider to determine the additional tools you may require to care for your baby.
Clothing
Newborns grow surprisingly quickly and will outgrow most of their newborn-sized clothes within a few weeks. Your newborn will need only five to 10 rompers, body-suits or tee-shirts to get her through this phase of rapid growth. Depending on the climate of your area and the season in which your baby is born, you may also need two to three newborn hats and a few pairs of socks. Although fashionable, shoes and pants are unnecessary at this stage.
Crib
Even if you plan to co-sleep with your newborn, it is best to have a crib or bassinet. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises parents to thoroughly research any used crib before purchasing it. Although modern cribs and bassinets must pass rigorous safety standards, some older pieces of furniture might have been recalled since their manufacture. If you practice co-sleeping, consider purchasing a sidecar bassinet or "Snuggle Nest" that fits inside your own bed.
Diaper Supplies
Newborn babies can go through as many as 12 diapers per day, so prepare yourself by purchasing diapers before your baby arrives. If you plan to use cloth diapers, purchase enough to last for two days. Cloth diaper users require at least one pail for storing soiled material, and a few covers to prevent leakage. Note that, according to the Mayo Clinic, traditional vinyl ("rubber") diaper covers tend to cause and worsen rashes. Two to three packages of disposable diapers may be necessary if you do not intend to use reusable products. You will also need a few packages of cloth or disposable baby wipes.
Bathing Supplies
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all expectant parents prepare for a new baby by purchasing an infant tub, but notes that it is possible to bathe a baby directly in a large sink. To keep your baby clean, you will also require a few soft washcloths, at least one towel and a small supply of infant-friendly soap. Other essentials for grooming your newborn include infant nail clippers and diaper ointment for rash prevention. Although popular, infant lotions are generally unnecessary unless the baby has very dry skin.
