Imagine Florida: warm weather, beaches and Mickey Mouse. Out of the cities, and into the forest, Florida has a lot more to offer the outdoor adventurer. Florida is surrounded by beaches that branch into dozen of rivers flowing through a variety of landscapes for you to explore. Kayaking is an exciting and healthy way to enjoy Florida's waters. Whether you are near the Panhandle or at the southern tip, you can kayak.

North Florida

North Florida has rivers full of wildlife, but is less intimidating than the Everglades. Adventures Unlimited Outdoor Center is in Northwest Florida through the Blackwater River State Forest. Kayak trips here range from 4 to 15 miles. Consider your skill and strength level before taking the challenge. You can paddle by yourself or use a duo kayak. In Tallahassee, you can enjoy a guided, week-long tour through various waters surrounding the Wakulla Springs State Park.

Central Florida

Central Florida features the Nature Coast, which is rich in forest and rivers. The Chassahowitzka River is one of these rivers, encompassing numerous loops and springs to kayak. Bring a kayak or canoe of your own; only canoes are available for rent. Within this single-kayaking adventure you will come across marshes, swamps, brackish water, salt water and a variety of animals. There are 7- and 11-mile loops to take. Many other Central Florida areas, such as the Withlacoochee River and the Suwannee River, are kayak friendly.

Two-Day Trip

South of Tampa, you can enjoy a peaceful and primitive kayak camping experience in the Peace River. Bring your kayak and compass for the Peace River Canoe Trail. This river branches into a number of creeks lined with palm and cypress trees. There are camping areas along the river, but no specific sites; it's completely primitive. Start and stop wherever you choose along this 67-mile river.

The Suwannee River

The Suwannee River is one of the most popular kayak destinations. You can kayak for a day or spend two weeks kayaking to the Gulf of Mexico. There are numerous outposts and campgrounds along the Suwannee River to set you up. Stop for fishing, swimming and intermittent entertainment. Kayak alone or on a tour.

Everglades

Everglades National Park encircles 1.4 million acres of diverse wildlife and landscapes. You can kayak through the swamps here, but it is less ideal for swimming; murky water can make it hard to spot dangerous animals. You can go along day trips by yourself while staying at the campground, or merge into the water for a week. SIx- and 10-day tours of the Everglades are available.
