Some childhood memories never leave you. You may not remember the exact date, but you know you learned your ABCs, 123s, shoe tying and left vs. right when you were a child. Learning was probably easier then as it was catered to your short attention span. At some point, your teachers regrettably decided that plopping books and tests in front of you was the new way to learn. But you can revisit the simple days by teaching your children how you learned.

Step 1

Teach your children the Hokey Pokey. The lyrics are self-explanatory, but you may need refreshing: Put your left foot in; take your left foot out. Put your left foot back in; shake it all about. Repeat with right foot, left arm, right arm, head and finally your whole body. Remind your child that the hokey pokey is what it's all about.

Step 2

Sing "Father Abraham" to your child. The lyrics are: Father Abraham had many sons/ Many sons had Father Abraham/ I am one of them and so are you/ So let's all praise the Lord/ (insert body part). You can change the last lyrics to "let's all sing and dance" if you are not Christian. Swing a new body part back and forth after each verse until all arms and legs are in motion. Begin with the right arm.

Step 3

Do the Cha-Cha Slide. Playing Mr. C's song is all the instruction kids will need as he guides you through the dance. Pause the song occasionally and repeat the instructions so they don't get lost. This is easier said than done: you may find yourself engrossed in the dancing.
