Nail biting not only causes the fingernails to look unsightly, but can also pose health risks. According to MayoClinic.com, nail biting increases the risk of passing bacteria or viruses from your finger to your mouth as well as worsening infections of the nail bed. If your daughter bites her nails, it could be a sign of anxiety or a compulsive disorder. If you have concerns about the habit, speak to her pediatrician.

Step 1

Point out the nail biting behavior. The KidsHealth website sponsored through the Nemours Foundation states that you should make the child know of your displeasure. Ask her calmly to try to stop doing it because you don't like the behavior.

Step 2

Make her nails pretty. Bring your daughter for a manicure. If she has her nails cared for and painted with a favorite color, she may be more open to stopping the habit.

Step 3

Keep lollipops on hand. "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Children" found on the Mother Nature website states that oral gratification can help a child stop biting her nails. Purchase sugarless versions for her to suck on when she feels the urge to bite her nails.

Step 4

Set up a rewards system. Allow your daughter to pick out a reward for not biting her nails and track her progress with a sticker chart. If she does not bite her nails for a set period of time, allow her to pick a reward, such as a new outfit, DVD or dinner out at her favorite restaurant. If she does not succeed, start over and give her another chance to work towards the reward.

Step 5

Praise her often. KidsHealth recommends letting your child know often that you notice she is not biting her nails. Let her know how proud you are and how pretty her nails look.

Tips and Warnings

  • You can put something bitter tasting on her nails to stop the habit, such as cayenne pepper or an anti-nail biting polish. However, your daughter should be at least 4-years-old for this tactic.

Things You'll Need
