Atlanta, Georgia, is a city where tennis is a major popular sport. In the 2010 United States Tennis Association's best tennis town competition, Atlanta made the top ten, and it was the largest tennis town of all. About 250,000 people play tennis in Atlanta, including those in wheelchairs, juniors, adults, seniors and professionals. If you are looking to play tennis in Atlanta, you are in the right place.

Public Parks

You can play tennis at many public parks in and around Atlanta. Piedmont Park is to Atlanta what Central Park is to New York. Piedmont Park has many activities, including a tennis center. Other Atlanta parks with tennis centers are Chastain Park, Blackburn Tennis Center, Bitsy Grant Tennis Center, DeKalb Tennis Center and Sandy Springs Tennis Center. The Atlanta suburbs all have parks with tennis centers, as well.

Neighborhoods

Many Atlanta neighborhoods have community tennis courts. You can find tennis courts in upscale and exclusive communities that also contain golf courses, swimming pools and hiking trails to neighborhoods that are more modest and in apartment complexes. If your neighborhood has two lighted tennis courts, you can form a team and join one of Atlanta's competitive leagues, such as the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association, the United States Tennis Association, T2Tennis, the Peach Tennis League and Ultimate Tennis.

Private Clubs

You can join one of a number of private tennis clubs in Atlanta. One noteworthy club is the Atlanta Athletic Club. This club was the home of the Atlanta ATP Tournament, which ran from 1986 to 2001. The event returned in July 2010 and was the first tournament of eight, which led to the US Open. Pros who played in this event include Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, Lleyton Hewitt and John Isner.

Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA)

ALTA is a nonprofit organization that promotes the development of tennis. ALTA's main function is to organize league play for adult and junior teams in Atlanta and its neighboring counties. ALTA has about 80,000 members, as of 2010. ALTA abides by the rules of the USTA. Volunteers who live in and around Atlanta comprise the governing committee who make this league work.

United States Tennis Association (USTA)

Atlanta has the largest USTA adult and junior leagues in the country. More than 50,000 people who live in Atlanta are USTA members. The USTA began in 1881. It owns the US Open. It also administers programs across the United States for players of all ability levels and ages.
