While some Sundays are perfect for lounging in pajamas all day, San Francisco offers tempting options for people with the energy to head outside. The city hosts farmers' markets and community exercise Sundays to promote healthy living. The diverse range of options ensures that everyone can find a comfortable way to celebrate health on Sunday in San Francisco.

Visit a Farmers' Market

San Francisco comes alive every weekend with farmers' markets across the city. The Heart of the City Farmers' Market is open every Sunday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in front of the Civic Center, where dozens of farmers and thousands of visitors celebrate fresh produce and healthy eating. (See Ref. 4.) On Sunday mornings between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Inner Sunset neighborhood near Golden Gate Park hosts a small farmers' market.

Participate in "Sunday Streets"

Along with several other world cities, San Francisco hosts "Sunday Streets," an event that shuts down streets for people to exercise together and get to know each other. Mayor Gavin Newsom says that it fosters physical fitness and a sense of community. Participants can show up and participate for free by walking, jogging, cycling or skating. Free yoga, aerobics, and tai chi sessions are spread out over the course for people who feel the urge to try something different.

Relax at a Yoga Session

Many San Franciscan yoga studios have Sunday yoga meetings. Yoga Tree--which has several locations around the city--offers a range of yoga classes on Sundays. These include Radiant Flow yoga, to practice grace in movement, and Vinyasa, which increases flexibility, strength and endurance. People can choose the class that suits their mood for the day, whether they want to practice strength training yoga or unwind before the upcoming week with mindful yoga.

Visit a Cookbook Bookstore

Health food lovers who are eager to learn healthy recipes can visit one of the city's cookbook stores for ideas. Books on healthy diets, vegan recipes and kitchen gardens may inspire many to pick up a spatula or shop for tomato seeds.

Omnivore Books on Food, located on Cesar Chavez Street, is open Sunday afternoons and stocks books on the evolution of cooking from colonial India to the present day. (See Ref. 1) City Lights Bookstore, a three-story bookstore on Columbus Avenue, also has an extensive cooking section.

Dine at a Vegetarian Restaurant

San Francisco is known for being a health-conscious city, and many of its restaurant reflect this. Vegetarian establishments across the city experiment with meat-free foods, from Indian cuisine to juice bars that sell soy ice cream, such as Judahlicious. Cafe Gratitude, with locations in Inner Sunset and Mission districts, offers a vegetarian menu with fresh, organic ingredients. (See Resource 1) Greens Restaurant overlooking the bay offers a full vegetarian menu by chef Annie Somerville. (See Ref. 5.)
