What To Look For

What to look for in a first aid kit depends on when and where you will use it. If you have a newborn child, you may want a first aid kit tailored specially to a baby's needs, that is, light enough for you to take with you on day trips and short outings. If you want to equip your car with a first aid kit, your needs will be different. A backpacking first aid kit presents other demands.

A good strategy is to start with a basic first aid kit that includes a variety of bandages in different sizes, first aid tape, gauze, antibiotic ointment or rubbing alcohol pads and a variety of singly packed medicines like aspirin, Tylenol, Benadryl and cortisone cream. From there, you can augment your kit with individual items that are appropriate to your needs. For example you might add in infant medicines if your kit is for a baby or you might add in moleskin if you intend to take your kit on backpacking adventures.

Common Pitfalls

Buying a first aid kit is a little like buying an insurance policy--there's a big temptation to buy more than you need. An oversized first aid kit that is cumbersome to carry is more likely to be left home, out of your reach when you need it. Make sure your first aid kits contain the essentials, but also keep the size to something that is practical for your needs.

Where To Buy

The best place to purchase your first aid kit depends on your specific needs. If you are buying a kit for camping or backpacking, then visiting REI, Cabela's or another outdoor store can be beneficial. You can ask the staff questions like whether or not you'll need a snakebite kit for your next outing and they'll be prepared to answer you. If you're shopping for a portable kit that will help you respond to bumps, bruises and illnesses for your child, you might find better options and support at Babies R Us or a similar store. For general purposes you can usually find everything you need at your local department store or pharmacy.

Cost

The price tag on first aid kits varies widely based on the size and complexity of the kit. At REI, you can purchase basic first aid kits for $7. You can also find top-of-the-line kits loaded with supplies for around $300. At Target, you can find basic first aid kits for $8. You can also buy a first-responder kit that equips you for dealing with emergency situations for $330.

Insider Tips

Don't forget to regularly restock your first aid kit after you've used it. Once a month, do a kit inventory and add depleted items to your shopping list. That way, you'll always be prepared.
