How to Sanitize a Cool Mist Humidifier

Cool mist humidifiers are one of three basic kinds of humidifiers, all of which are used to keep air moist where they are being used. Where ultrasonic humidifiers and vaporizers use sound and heat respectively to convert water to mist, a cool mist humidifier pushes water through a filter or mists water using a rapidly spinning disk. According to Health Canada, cleaning your cool mist humidifier is important. Not doing so can lead to bacterial accumulation in the water. Your family could breathe in the contaminated mist, which might lead to asthma, allergies and other respiratory problems.

Step 1

Unplug your cool mist humidifier.

Step 2

Disassemble the humidifier. The specific method will vary from model to model, so consult the owner's manual if it's not intuitive.

Step 3

Empty the receiving basin of any standing water.

Step 4

Wash out the receiving basin with water and mild soap. Wipe down any surfaces of the other parts that you can reach.

Step 5

Rinse off all parts of the humidifier.

Step 6

Fill the basin with hot water. Add one capful of bleach and stir. Set the other humidifier components in the bleach solution. Let sit for ten minutes.

Step 7

Rinse all components of the humidifier thoroughly.
