Acne is a skin condition that refers to excessive pimple formation of the skin. Pimples, also known as comedones, are caused by dead skin cells, bacteria and excess skin oil forming clogs within your skin's tiny openings, otherwise known as pores. The pimple's contents are sometimes squeezed out by the sufferer, only to leave scarring behind. When acne is present, this scarring covers a larger area, leading to increased cosmetic concern.

Step 1

Wash your skin twice daily with a mild, non-drying soap. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, washing makeup off at night and cleansing your skin after exercise will help prevent pore-blocking material from embedding in your pores. Opt for soaps that contain no artificial dyes or fragrances, which have a drying effect on all skin types.

Step 2

Cleanse your hair daily and make sure that it is pulled away from your face to avoid cross-contamination of oils, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Oil transfer to your face can not only clog pores but also inhibit acne treatment effectiveness.

Step 3

Consult your dermatologist regarding dermabrasion or laser resurfacing treatments, according to KidsHealth.org. These treatments remove the outer layers of damaged skin, promoting new skin growth while eliminating pimple scars and blemishes. Your dermatologist will discuss your medical history with you before making the decision to move forward with in office procedures.

Step 4

Apply water-based cosmetics labeled non-comedogenic. Cosmetics that are oil- or petroleum-based will only promote and worsen acne while enhancing the appearance of pimple marks. Non-comedogenic cosmetics contain no oil and have been proven not to settle into your pores.

Step 5

Apply an over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide lotion to your skin after cleansing. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria deep within pores while drying up excess oil. The outer layer of skin peels with use of these products, stimulating new, clear skin growth.

Tips and Warnings

  • Never pick or squeeze a pimple. This drives blockage deeper into your pores and increases your risk of developing acne scars.
