Coming out as a gay person can be one of the most challenging things you ever do, but, if you are indeed homosexual, it is essential for your happiness and growth as a person. Although today's society is growing increasingly tolerant of gay people, there is still significant discrimination, particularly if you live in a small town, are religious or serve in the military. It is important to remember that being gay is not something you chose to be, but, rather, one facet of the person you fundamentally are.
Step 1
Ask yourself what you want. Consider looking at yourself in the future. Are you considering life with a partner? Children? Get quiet, and look inside yourself. The picture you see may give you an indication of whether you're gay.
Step 2
Date people of both genders. This doesn't mean becoming entangled in relationships, it just means you go out and see if the attraction is there. If you find that you're more strongly attracted to people of your gender, you may be gay.
Step 3
Visit places where gay people hang out, and see if you feel comfortable. Do you feel "right," for example, when browsing in a gay bookstore, or dancing at a gay bar?
Step 4
Watch TV and movies. Listen to music. Who are your celebrity crushes? What musician's music speaks to you, and who makes your pulse quicken when you see an image of them? Whose laugh makes you want to laugh? Celebrity crushes are a good way to determine the gender and type of person to whom you are attracted.
