Portlandville is located along the Susquehanna River, in central New York. The area around this small town features several park options for RVers visiting the area. Its rural location is near the larger city of Cooperstown and the Catskill and Appalachian Mountains giving visitors access to a variety of activities to keep them busy during their stay.
Park Options
The RV parks in the Portlandville area are a combination of privately-owned parks and a nearby state park. Some of these parks are only open during the high season, which typically extends from spring to fall. As an example, Susquehanna Trail Campground is only open from April 15th through October 31st. Some parks, such as Deer Haven Campground and Cabins, have limited sites available year-round. Because the high season is in demand, reservations are recommended.
RV Sizes
The RV sizes that can be accommodated by each park vary. Most parks in this area have big rig access and pull-through RV sites, thanks to the rural area. Beaver Spring Lake Campground offers visitors 120 extra-large sites. Susquehanna has 60 RV sites that it bills as "No big rig too big." Both sites are spacious enough to facilitate your RV's slide-outs, giving you lots of room to stretch out after spending the day enjoying the many activities in the area.
Amenities
Full hookups with electric and water are standard in the Portlandville area. Most also offer fire rings and picnic tables at each site. Deer Valley, Beaver Spring and Susquehanna also all have free Wi-Fi access for their guests. All three also have cabin rentals available. While at Deer Haven, start your morning with some laps in its pool or spend the day fishing in the on-site pond. Susquehanna also offers fishing in nearby Otego Creek. Beaver Spring Lake not only offers fishing, but also boating opportunities for visitors.
Gilbert Lake State Park
Stay and play at nearby Gilbert Lake State Park. Although Gilbert Lake doesn't offer pull-through sites, they do have a select number of sites available with electrical hookup. There is so much to do all within the park's borders. Gilbert Lake and the three ponds offer lots of opportunities for boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and swimming. There are also 12 miles of interconnected trails through the park that are great for hiking in the milder months and snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter months. Gilbert Lake even has an on-site disc golf course for the whole family to enjoy.
Other Area Attractions
Nearby Cooperstown offers more than just the world famous Baseball Hall of Fame. While in the area, take a stroll through the Joseph L. Popp Jr. Butterfly Conservatory where you can see hundreds of butterflies as well as a diverse botanical garden.
