A fistula is a small tear that occurs in the anus or rectovaginal area. It occurs due to constipation and excess straining of the muscles used during a bowel movement or childbirth. There are some home remedies that help treat anal fistulas that will help with relieving pain and healing the fistula. If the fistula is severe and does not respond to home remedies, it may need to be surgically repaired by a physician.

Change the Diet

Changing the diet can help with relieving the pain of the fistula and healing it, according to Home Remedies For You. A diet that consists of more fiber will help the body have regular bowel movements and avoid constipation. Multigrain cereal and bread can add extra fiber to the body, and certain snack or granola bars contain a daily serving of fiber. Consuming more fruits and vegetables is also beneficial. Radishes, papayas and prunes help in relieving constipation to allow the anal fistula heal.

Loose Underwear

Wearing loose underwear is important when trying to heal a fistula. Tight underwear will restrict the air flow to the fistula and may cause it to become irritated. Wear loose cotton underwear while the fistula is present, according to the Mayo Clinic. If the underwear becomes soiled, change it quickly so the fistula is not irritated any more.

Apply Cream or Powder

Applying a cream or powder to the area with the fistula can offer some relief of pain and help with the healing process, according to the Mayo Clinic. The cream or powder will cover the fistula and the surrounding area, which will prevent any excess moisture from irritating it during a bowel movement. Since there will be no direct contact with fecal matter, the skin and fistula is less likely to be irritated.
