Most possessions during a volleyball match require players to jump, run and dive, all of which demand athleticism and specific skills. Incorporating a structured and demanding practice plan that includes volleyball drills and overall fitness can help a coach or teacher prepare her team for the season.

Hitting

A popular hitting drill to improve basic technique, according to Volleyball Drills, involves two players. The players line up facing each other. One player tosses the ball up toward the hitter. The player leaps in the air and reaches the ball at its highest point. The player then swings her arm forward, and with a stiff, flat hand, hits the ball downward. Having the player focus on the timing of the jump can improve on-court play.

Reach and Bounce

According to Volleyball, this drill is designed for players to practice penetrating the net and blocking. Have a player stand on a chair 1 1/2 feet from the net with a volleyball in hand. On the opposite side of the net, a player leaps up, reaches over the net and grabs the volleyball with both hands. On the way down, in one fluid motion, the player tosses the ball behind her head, sprints to the service line and returns to the net in a defensive position. This drill can be reset and done continuously with multiple players by forming a line at the base of the net.

Practice Plan

A practice plan should outline objectives with a summary and corresponding time line. Objectives should include hitting and blocking drills, conditioning, instruction and practice for any new formations, as well as a discussion of upcoming games. Include a variety of drills that emphasize hitting, blocking, serving and passing.

Considerations

While composing a practice plan, consider rotating and alternating various drills. By not repeating a drill, you can eliminate repetition that may lead to boredom. In addition to drills, stretch at the beginning and end of each practice to help players remain flexible and limber.

History

The history and trivia of volleyball can be included in practice as a way for players to appreciate the game. According to News Dial, volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan. The game was designed to incorporate the sports of basketball, tennis, baseball and handball. A borrowed tennis net, measuring 6 feet 6 inches, was erected for the first match.
