Since bicycles are among the largest items you store in your garage, they have the biggest chance of creating clutter. If your bicycles are not organized, they will not only take up a large amount of room, but also make it difficult to store other items in the limited space. If your garage is being taken over by your family's bicycles, consider building a rack to get the bikes organized and out of the way.

Step 1

Place the two 30-inch 2-by-4s on a flat building surface so they are standing on the 2-inch end. Measure 6 inches from one end of the boards and make a mark with the pencil.

Step 2

Place a 26-inch 2-by-4 between the two pieces, so it is standing on a 2-inch edge and is even with the marks you made. Screw the 30-inch pieces to the 26-inch piece by driving two screws through the sides of the longer pieces into the ends of the shorter pieces.

Step 3

Place the last 26-inch 2-by-4 between the 30-inch pieces so it forms the fourth side of a 26-inch-by-24-inch rectangle. This piece should be even with the edges of the 30-inch pieces. Screw this into place by driving two screws through the sides of the 30-inch pieces into the ends of this 26-inch piece. This is the frame of the rack.

Step 4

Position a piece of 24-inch 2-by-2 on top of one of the 30-inch pieces so one of its edges is even with the inside edge of the frame. Screw this piece to the frame by driving screws spaced every 3 to 4 inches through the top of the 2-by-2 and into the 2-by-4.

Step 5

Measure 5 inches from the inside edge of the 2-by-2 toward the opposite side and make a mark. Place another piece of 2-by-2 at this mark and screw it into the frame by driving screws through the top of the 2-by-2 at both ends

Step 6

Repeat the process of adding pieces of 2-by-2. Measuring 5 inches from the previous board, make a mark and screw the next board into the frame. At the end, you should have four 5-inch spaces where the bike tires will go, with the 2-by-2 boards separating the spaces.

Tips and Warnings

  • This rack will fit four bikes. If you need to organize more, either build a bigger rack or increase the size of the 26-inch pieces by 7 inches.
