When incorporating walking into your workout routine, you might wonder whether it is better to exercise outside or on a treadmill. Naturally, there are pros and cons to each method, but going with what is enjoyable and will help you exercise the most is your best bet.

Outdoor Walking Considerations

One consideration with walking outside is the conditions. While indoor treadmills are always in a controlled-climate environment, walking outside can include braving rain, snow or frigid temperatures. When walking outside in cold weather, wear several layers of clothes and know when to stop exercising. Seasonal allergies can also inhibit outdoor walkers from exercising effectively, so if you suffer from them make sure you take medication at least 30 minutes before you begin. Many people prefer the change of scenery that comes with walking outside, as it can help alleviate boredom. It is advisable to keep a cell phone with you, especially if you walk alone in the morning or at dusk.

Indoor Treadmill Considerations

Walkers report that treadmills are better on their joints due to the padded surface. Treadmills are also level and their speed can be kept consistent, which may help walkers increase their speed and calorie burn. However, cost can be a consideration, as joining a gym or purchasing a treadmill for your home can be costly. Consider local community center facilities that have treadmills and other workout equipment; it may only cost $15 to $30 per month to become a member.

Walking Goals

When choosing between a treadmill and the outdoors, it's important to consider what you want to accomplish. If completing a 5K race is your goal, consider doing as much walking as possible outside, since the event will be outdoors. If you just want to lose weight, using a treadmill may be best because you can increase and decrease the speed and incline to maximize calorie burn.
