The basic types of foot arches are high, medium and low. Most heavy runners fall into the latter category. Common to this type of foot arch is an inward roll of the ankle. Heavy runners with this type of foot structure are referred to as overpronators. Overpronators require a specific type of footwear known as motion control shoes. Standard among motion control shoes are firmer support, more heel cushioning and flatter soles.
