A shrewdly chosen triathlon coach will give you an advantage you cannot gain by training on your own. A certified triathlon coach can provide you with direction, structure, guidance and support and do so from a background of firsthand experience in the sport that is likely to exceed your own. But finding a coach who you connect with, can be motivated by, who you trust and who can draw the best out of you—that takes research and time.

Step 1

Contact USA Triathlon for help locating a USAT certified coach. USA Triathlon is the governing body for the sport in the U.S. and works with elite and amateur athletes.

Step 2

Contact one of the major triathlon coaching companies (see References) either by phone or online and search for a coach who can best meet your needs.

Step 3

Visit Trifind.com online. Click on the state in which you currently reside or would like to train. Click on the name of any listed trainers for a brief resume, including services offered, coaching specialties and background.

Step 4

Seek an online coach. A number of coaches now offer their services online. Note that this can be ideal if you believe a certain coach is a perfect match for you but lives in another state. Type “online triathlon coach” into an Internet search engine for a long list of coaches and organizations.

Step 5

Attend a triathlon training camp. Choose a camp length of anywhere from a weekend to two weeks working with staff coaches. Inquire afterward regarding specific coaches if you feel they can help you achieve your goals.

Step 6

Talk with fellow triathletes. Contact potential coaches with a recommendation or referral to improve your chances of booking a suitable coach.
