You must find a marathon if you are going to run a marathon. If you do not qualify for the demanding Boston Marathon, and the idea of playing the lottery to enter the New York City Marathon is unappealing, remember that marathons take place both across the U.S. as well as internationally. Whether entering Thailand’s Pattaya Queen’s Cup Marathon, the Victoria Falls Marathon in Zimbabwe or the Make It by Midnight Marathon in Macon, Georgia, finding an accessible marathon that is suitable to your skill level is possible.

Step 1

Ask other runners, especially those who have run marathons.

Step 2

Join a running club. Running clubs often host races as well provide calendar information on races outside their area.

Step 3

View the race finder page at Runner’s World magazine online. Select variables that apply for city, state or country, event size and type of race. Click the “Find Races” button and receive a list of marathon options near the area selected.

Step 4

Visit Marathonguide.com and click on the “Calendars” button for a U.S. marathon map, listings for the U.S. and Canada, listings for International races and a quick search dialogue box as well.

Step 5

Find a copy of the book "The Ultimate Guide to International Marathons" by Dennis Crayton and Rich Hanna for detailed race listings and information.
