Most often caused by friction resulting from excess heat and moisture within a shoe, blisters can be painful reminders for runners to take care of their feet. While blisters are generally considered a minor irritation, a blister can alter a runner’s gait and over time, lead to more serious injuries. If the blister doesn’t feel like it will pop on its own, or impede your stride, then it can be left to heal on its own. If the blister hampers movement or feels like it's on the verge of popping, it should be lanced.

Step 1

Sterilize a needle and the area around the blister by rubbing it with a sterile cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol.

Step 2

Pierce the blister with the needle, leaving two holes at opposing ends of the blister (four holes in total).

Step 3

Push gently on the blister until the fluid has drained.

Step 4

Clear the blister and the surrounding area of fluid and sterilize the area again by blotting it with an cotton ball saturated with alcohol.

Step 5

Cover the blister with a piece of gauze that’s slightly larger than the blister and attach it with athletic tape.

Step 6

Pad the blister by cutting a hole in the gauze that’s the size of the blister before applying it if walking on the blister causes discomfort.
