Breast augmentation allows a woman to increase the size of her breasts through surgical implants. After surgery, strict instructions must be followed to ensure proper healing and recovery, and that usually includes avoiding vigorous physical activity, such as running, for several weeks. But after the recovery period is over, most women can safely and comfortably run with breast implants.

Time Frame

In most cases, it is recommended you wait at least two to four weeks after your breast augmentation surgery to resume running, but it's important to follow your doctor's specific post-surgery instructions. Depending on the risk factors and potential complications associated with your surgery, you may need to avoid running for a longer period. Speak to your doctor for specific instructions.

Negative Effects

Dr. Brooke Seckel, a plastic surgeon in Boston, explains on RealSelf that running too soon after breast augmentation surgery can ultimately affect the results. Although the motion of running should not actually damage the implant itself, it could damage the tissue underneath. The repetitive bouncing motion of running or jogging moves the implant against the lower breast tissue, which eventually can become weak. The skin might stretch slightly, and the implants could drop down, causing an unnatural look.

Back Pain

Large breast implants add significant weight to the front of the body, which can have a detrimental effect on the back. As you run, the breasts are subjected to continuous bouncing and jostling, and gravity pulls them down and puts pressure on the spine to support the weight. In some cases, large breast implants might also cause poor running posture if you are not accustomed to the weight, and that also can lead to back and neck pain.

Sports Bra

Wearing a supportive sports bra can help limit the movement of the breast implants while running. Select one that not only compresses the breasts against the chest but also lifts them slightly to prevent unnecessary weight on the back and shoulders. The sports bra should have a snug fit but not be so tight that it hinders your breathing. When trying on sports bras, mimic the jogging movement in the dressing room. If your breasts are uncomfortable or moving too much, that sports bra is not supportive enough for you.

Alternatives

Although running with breast implants is completely safe after the recovery period, the activity may still be uncomfortable for some. Fortunately, there are a variety of exercise alternatives that cause less movement of the breasts, including brisk walking, bicycling, using the elliptical, rowing and swimming. All provide an excellent cardiovascular workout but do not require the consistent up-and-down movements associated with running.
