The natural healing benefits of herbs might seem a bit mysterious; however, a basic understanding of natural remedies will help you to uncover some of this mystique. There are many herbal products available to gently treat minor ailments, but before you begin you must talk to your doctor to decide what herbal remedies are right for you and your family. You should always use caution with herbal remedies.

Aloe Vera

The gel from this plant soothes sunburns and other first-degree burns. It also relieves itching from poison oak or ivy. By topically applying the cool gel from this succulent plant, you will also help prevent infection and speed tissue healing. Be aware that using aloe vera is not without possible side effects and allergic reactions. Be sure to talk to your doctor before using this remedy.

Arnica

Apply arnica, found as a cream or ointment, to bruises, sprains or aching muscles. Before applying, be sure that there is no open wound to prevent infection or toxicity. Arnica can also be found as a pellet that can be dissolved under your tongue in place of conventional pain reliever, such as ibuprofen. Be sure to talk to your doctor to find out arnica is right for you.

Calendula

Calendula is a natural alternative to antibiotic ointment. It is a member of the marigold family that has both wound-healing and antiseptic properties. It is found as a diluted tincture to clean and heal minor cuts and scrapes. Before using calendula, talk to your doctor about possible side effects.

Charcoal

Charcoal comes in a powdered form that is made of finely powered carbon treated with oxygen. This "activated" charcoal is highly porous and can trap infectious agents and prevent them from entering the bloodstream. Charcoal powder can be mixed with water and applied to insect bites or stings. Do not use charcoal powder without first speaking with your doctor about possible side effects.

Echinacea

Echinacea is known to have properties that support the immune system. Typically found in capsules, it can be taken during the cold and flu season as a preventative support. Before taking echinacea, talk to your doctor about your specific health conditions.

Lavender Oil

This essential oil has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be applied directly to your skin to cleanse a wound, reduce pain or cool and relieve a minor burn. Lavender oil can also be used as an insect repellent, stress reducer or headache reliever. Before using lavender oil, talk to your doctor to rule out any possible side effects or contradictions.

Peppermint

Peppermint is considered helpful in relieving indigestion, nausea and motion sickness. You can find peppermint in ready-made tea bags or you can use peppermint oil in hot water. Before using peppermint as a natural remedy, talk to your doctor about your specific health conditions and needs.
