How to Remove a Nose Ring Stud With a Half Circle

The studs most frequently inserted into nostril piercings have no backs, like traditional stud earrings. Nose ring studs are called nostril screws. A nostril screw starts out as a fishtail, which looks like a straight pin with a blunt end. Your piercer bends the fishtail into the correct shape for your nose before performing the piercing. The part of the screw that sits inside your nostril is bent into a half-circle shape to hold the jewelry in place.

Step 1

Wash your hands and the outside of your piercing with antibacterial soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean paper towel.

Step 2

Wet a clean cotton swab with warm water and use it to clean around the jewelry inside your nostril. You will find that you can actually move the half-circle shape around.

Step 3

Push the jewelry against the inside of your nostril with the cotton swab. You should see the straight part of the bar protrude from the outside of your nostril.

Step 4

Hook your fingernail under the top of the bead on the outside of your nostril and gently pull down while continuing to push the jewelry from the inside with the cotton swab. You will see the bend in the jewelry start to come out through the outside of the piercing.

Step 5

Twist your nostril screw towards your face to "unscrew" the half circle from inside your nose.

Step 6

Wash the nostril screw for three minutes with antibacterial soap and warm water. Store it in the plastic sandwich bag in your jewelry box until you are ready to wear it again.
